- Dr. Byron Cummings, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Arizona, is leading his students on a field trip to Rainbow Bridge in 1935. Among these students are Tad Nichols and Mary Jane Hayden. [The image numbered NAU.PH.99.3.1.1.9 appears in Tad's Glen Canyon book on page 99.] [8 of the 18 photographs in this group have not been digitized, but are available for viewing at Cline Library Special Collections and Archives.]
- Biography/History
- Byron Cummings was considered a pioneer in Southwestern archaeology. He discovered and explored many archaeological sites, and his expeditions in Utah and Arizona continued throughout his career. Dr. Cummings inspired many students over the years, including Tad and Mary Jane. From 1915-1938, Dr. Cummings also acted as the director of the Arizona State Museum. In addition, he is credited with the establishment of the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society in Tucson.
