- The original Thompson Journal of his 1871-1872 trip through the Grand Canyon is housed at the New York Public Library. This document is a transcript of the original created by Marty Anderson.
The material focuses on Powell's 2nd exploration, which ran down the Green River to the Colorado River, then down it to Kanab Creek. In addition to his comments about the many rapids through which the survey descended and the other hardships and frustrations endured, Thompson describes the landscape, geology, terrain, and many other aspects of the journey. He also discusses meetings and conversations with both Mormon settlers and local Native Americans.
- Biography/History
- This was the second of Powell's explorations of the Grand Canyon, and began at Green River, Wyoming in May of 1871. After running the rapids of the Green River under conditions of considerable danger, reaching the Colorado River, and descending through some of its rapids, the group elected to leave the river near Kanab Creek. On the expedition the survey identified the Escalante River and the Henry Mountains, the last unknown river and range in the continental United States. The expedition also produced photographs taken by E.O. Beaman, James Fennimore, and Jack K. Hillers, three of the west's great photographers.
