Loom in the Desert. With mighty rock formations in Monument Valley, Arizona as a background, three Navajo Indian women stand near their loom.  They are famous for their rugs, a native craft which still persists as a means of life on their Reservation. [Photographer's caption] The Three Sisters Formation in Monument Valley, Arizona. Pioneer Woman - Monument Valley, Arizona. Whittled by the ages of erosion, the bonneted figure of a Pioneer Woman is seen in the shape of this great red sandstone rock, about 500 feet in height. Content Summary
This series contains 898 images of Monument Valley. Forty-three of those images are digitized and available for immediate viewing electronically. Images portray rug-weaving, sheepherding, sheepshearing, horseback riding, and drilling for uranium. Also shown are rock formations, Indian ruins, petroglyphs, pictographs, sand dunes, trees, trading posts, and a movie set. Navajo men, women, and children appear in many images, as well as traders at their stores and a nurse at a clinic. Biography/History
Josef Muench was born in Bavaria on February 8, 1904. At the age of 11 he received his first camera and began a lifelong interest in capturing nature on film. He arrived in the United States with his brother in 1926 and eventually settled in Santa Barbara, California. In the 1930s, Muench began his long association with Arizona Highways Magazine. Josef Muench died in 1998.
