- Biography/History
- During 1927 and 1928, Clyde Kluckhohn led several of his young college friends on expeditions to explore the area around Wild Horse Mesa in the Navajo Indian Reservation. He later described the groups' adventures in a book entitled Beyond the Rainbow. James Judge Hanks, who acted as the primary photographer, was a member of both expeditions. The James J. Hanks Collection provides a personal and local glimpse of contemporary reports of these expeditions, including such examples as a colorful account by Hanks of a meal shared on the trail with a Navajo family, and a detailed account book containing fascinating information about expedition expenditures. Other highlights of the collection include descriptions of Hanks' expedition photographs, maps of the area (one with the route traveled marked on it by hand), Hanks' own sketched maps of the route, and a series of letters from Hanks to his mother providing a uniquely personal picture of the expedition and many of its most exciting moments.
