Content Summary
Florence Barker's two handwritten diaries revealing moments in her life, times, as well as her religious convictions. The diaries cover her years as a nurse and missionary to Native Americans in the Southwest. Florence Barker Collection, NAU Manuscript #10.
Biography/History
Florence Barker was born in 1891 in Central City, Colorado. In 1911 she began nurses training at St. Joseph's Hospital, Denver, Colorado and after graduation in 1914, she worked as a nurse in Wyoming and California. In 1922 she became a Plymouth Brethern Missionary Nurse at the Emmanuel Mission on the Navajo Indian Reservation in northeastern Arizona. Between 1927 and 1932 she worked at the hospital in Valentine, AZ with the Walapai/Hualapai. From 1932 to 1939 she worked as a field nurse on the Havasupai Indian Reservation. Between 1939 and 1952 she worked as a public health nurse with the Acoma and Laguna Indians in New Mexico. She retired in 1952 and little is known of Ms. Barker after that time.
